Caring for a new puppy or kitten

Caring for a new puppy or kitten

So, you’ve got a new puppy or kitten! Now what?

We have created a list of some important details that will help keep your new fur-baby healthy and happy!

Vet Check

It is likely that your new puppy or kitten has already been to the vet for their first vaccination with the breeder. If this isn’t the case, or if you would like a Vet to check over your new pet, we always recommend seeing one of our lovely Veterinarians. This way, you can meet our team, get your pet used to the clinic and get all of your questions answered!

Vaccinations

Puppies and kittens require a round of vaccinations before they have them done yearly. Vaccinations are done annually for life. Check with your breeder if the animal has already had their first vaccination and the date that the next one is due and book in a time to get the vaccine done. If you are unsure, we are always happy to help!

Puppies:

Puppies require three vaccinations, 4 weeks apart. The vaccinations will protect your puppy against harmful diseases, that include:

  • Canine distemper

  • Canine hepatitis

  • Canine parvovirus

  • Parainfluenza virus

  • Bordetella bronchiseptica

Kittens:

Kittens also require three vaccinations, 4 weeks apart. The diseases that vaccinations protect your kitten against include:

  • Feline Panalukopenia

  • Feline Rhinotracheitis

  • Feline Calicivirus

·        Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)

Microchip

Microchipping an animal will provide a permanent identification. Microchipping can be done during a consultation and is a quick, non-invasive procedure. Be sure to check the details on the microchip and keep them up to date. Keep the microchip number somewhere safe. For more information on microchipping – head to Central Animal Records

Registration

Cats and Dogs must be registered to your local council in Victoria. Please contact your local council to register your new pet.

Preventatives

Kittens and puppies can carry harmful parasites which can impact their health. Some parasites can also be zoonotic, which means they can be transferred to humans as well. We recommend using Nexgard Spectra for puppies and Wagg and Purr for kittens. Along side these products we recommend Popantal tape worming tablet. This means your pet will be fully covered against fleas, ticks, intestinal worms, and other harmful parasites.

The Essentials

Besides keeping your pet healthy, we also want to make sure they have plenty of things to keep them busy, keep them comfortable and keep them happy!

We recommend the following items below. (Please note this is only a guide, and there are plenty of great options out there!):

-        Collar with ID Name tag

-        Lead and balance harness for walking (puppies)

-        Soft, comfortable beds

-        Toys of all different textures and materials (please always monitor your pet when giving something new)

-        Travel crate (especially for kittens)

-        Indoor crate for training (puppies)

-        Food and water bowl (puzzle feeders or food dispensers are a great way to keep your pet entertained and slow down their eating!)

-        Car restraint

-        Puppy pads for toilet training

-        Waste bags (essential for walks)

-        High quality pet food (we recommend Hills or Royal Canin)

-        Tasty treats!

-        Brush to get grooming started early
