About Us

As a team at the Thornbury Veterinary Hospital we help save animals lives and enable them to live happier, better quality and longer lives. We help people who love their pets in what can often be a stressful time for them. We feel so lucky to be able to do what we do. To us, it’s not just a job, it’s an ongoing commitment and dedication to your best friend, in whatever way you need us. We treat your pets like our own because we care and know how much they mean to you, just like our pets mean the world to us too.

Long-term colleagues, Dr Ash and Dr Seina opened the privately owned and operated clinic in 2012 and have more than 40 years combined experience. They are joined by a passionate team of experienced Vets and Nurses, who all have their own furry friends support them. We all have different stories as to why we worked so hard to get into the veterinary industry, but essentially for everyone, it all boils down to the simple fact that we love caring for animals and the people that love them.

Pop down and say hello, we love meeting the people and pets of our Community.

Doing our bit for the community and the environment

Community engagement

At Thornbury Veterinary Hospital we love being involved with our local and wider communities in a multitude of ways.

We donate our time, materials and skills to help injured wildlife and stray pets, spend time at Welcome to Thornbury doing “Ask the Vet” Q & A sessions, support local businesses through promotions and social media, assist local animal charities with our time and expertise, and host bake sales to raise money for the RSPCA. Every month, we donate $1 per primary consultation to a different charity. We usually have staff members pick a charity for the donation and occasionally we also ask our clients to pick the charity for the donation!

Also, did you know we offer a pet education program at local schools? We talk to local school children about what it is to be a vet, how to safely approach dogs, and responsible pet ownership (if you are a teacher or want your school involved please contact us at [email protected]).

Sustainability statement

As veterinary caregivers, animal welfare is one of our main priorities. And we understand that climate change is a serious threat to the health of all animals, might they be domestic or wildlife. That is why, at Thornbury Veterinary Hospital, we acknowledge our social responsibility, and we are committed to reducing our impact on climate change by turning to more environmentally sustainable options wherever possible.

We have taken important steps in that direction over the years. Here are some examples:

We make efforts to reuse and recycle as much as possible. We repurpose empty fluid bags as cover boots for pets that have bandages on their feet, to avoid getting them wet. We also reuse bubble wrap to assist in warming patients under anaesthesia, or for packaging if needed. We use USB rechargeable devices or rechargeable batteries where possible, and if not, we recycle batteries. All our hard plastics are sent off to be reloved by local recyclers according to council policies. We are also working on elaborating a system to recycle electronic waste, and pens/markers.

We have put in place measures to be more energy efficient, and even conducted an energy assessment of our practice to find out what could be improved. All our computers are now powered down at the end of the work day to avoid useless electricity consumption. In the same spirit, we are now using a hot water urn instead of boiling the kettle multiple times a day. We use energy efficient appliances where possible, and sunshine for drying our clothes. We have changed our hot water heater to a much more energy efficient heat pump, replaced all lights in the practice to low energy LED lights, and installed an 8.16kw solar panel system on the rooftop for clean energy.

We also examined our water consumption and where appropriate, our taps are equipped with low flow aerators to minimise the amount of water we use.

We chose uniforms designed by Hand2Heart (https://hand2heart.com.au/), which are made of recycled plastic bottles and coffee grounds.

We are reviewing our anaesthetic protocols to use less anaesthetic gas. This is not only better for the environment (isoflurane is a potent greenhouse gas, and using it on a dog for 1 hour is equivalent to driving 19km), but also for pets as they get a faster, and smoother recovery.

Many staff members ride a bike to work instead of driving, and some also volunteer their time with organisations that work on environmental sustainability.

We are proud of what we have accomplished so far, but we want to keep moving forward. We recognise that global warming is a problem that can only be solved if everyone contributes. We invite you to join our efforts to create a better future for all humans and animals. You can start by making changes at home, at work or in your community. Feel free to chat to us about our sustainability efforts, and how you could implement some of those changes in your life! You can also find some useful links below.

Together, we can have a positive impact on the planet, and its inhabitants. There is no time like the present to start changing the future!

A professional, skilled & compassionate team. Thank you to the whole team past & present from the bottom of my heart for the amazing care you have shown Frankie over the last few years. I would also like to thank you for the kindness & compassion shown to this little rescue cat & myself last week, when the time had come that he needed to be helped to the rainbow bridge. Your kindness & compassion helped make a difficult time a little easier. And thank you so much for taking the time to send me such a lovely card. Such beautiful words, which started me crying again, but at the same time offered me a lot of comfort. xxx
